Smartlipo™ Frequently Asked Questions

What is Smartlipo™?

Smartlipo™ is a laser-assisted body contouring and sculpting procedure. It is a means of emulsifying and permanently removing fat cells. The laser also enhances collagen production resulting in skin tightening.

How is the Smartlipo™ procedure performed?

It is an office-based procedure done under local anesthesia much like novocaine. A very small needle-sized tube (cannula) containing a laser fiber is inserted under the skin. The laser’s energy dissolves the fat cells. These fat cells are then drained.

How is Smartlipo™ different than traditional liposuction?

Smartlipo™ is minimally invasive with little bleeding, so recovery time is shorter and results are immediate.

Who is an ideal candidate for the Smartlipo™ Procedure?

Ideal candidates are in good health and have areas of the body that are flabby with little or no response to diet and exercise.

Is Smartlipo™ FDA approved?

Smartlipo™ was approved by FDA in November 2006.

What body regions can be treated with Smartlipo™?

Typically Smartlipo™ is intended to improve the upper and lower abdomen, love handles, inner thighs, knees, arms, bra strap area, male breasts, face, chin and areas where there is loose or flabby skin.

What kind of pain and discomfort can I expect during the procedure?

The area being treated is given a local anesthetic with little or no discomfort. Once the anesthesia has worn off, you may feel tender as if your body had a good workout.

What am I expected to do following the procedure?

Low activity is recommended for a day or two. Refrain from hot tubs or strenuous exercise for 2 weeks. You may need to wear a compression garment for two to four weeks, depending on the area being treated.

What is the recovery time?

Many of our patients are able to return to work the following day. However, depending on your specific treatment and your job requirements, you may be advised to take a day or two of rest.

When will I be able to see results from the Smartlipo™?

Immediately. Continued improvement, including skin tightening, is seen gradually over the following 3 to 6 months.

Can I expect lasting results with Smartlipo™?

Yes! We are born with a finite number of fat cells that expand as we gain weight. Our bodies do not form new fat cells. The Smartlipo™ procedure eliminates fat cells from the treatment area permanently.

How does fractional CO2 laser skin resurfacing work?

Cosmetic surgery laser treatments using the Matrix fractional CO2 laser may reverse the signs of aging, sun-damaged skin, and acne scarring by stimulating the production of collagen and promoting skin tightening. The procedure is personally performed by our physicians in our private suite. The Matrix Fractional CO2 technology is designed in such a way that our physicians have precise control over the intensity of the treatment, thus accelerating the healing process.

How do I know if I am a candidate?

If your skin is showing signs of aging, wrinkles, sun damage, or acne scarring then you are a candidate for the Matrix CO2 fractional laser treatment. Our physicians and highly trained staff can help you determine your specific needs.

What does the laser treatment feel like?

Treatment sensations vary from person to person. During the procedure, tiny pulses of laser energy are delivered to the skin and most patients will experience a warm prickly sensation. Our physicians perform the procedure by applying topical anesthesia cream. Any redness, swelling or puffiness that occurs is typically gone within a few days, but may last up to a week or so.

How do I take care of my skin following treatment?

Post treatment care consists of staying indoors and out of the direct sunlight for a few days while applying a topical ointment and topical skin care as directed by our physicians.

How many laser anti-aging treatments are required?

Results vary with each patient. Most patients are satisfied following a single treatment, but in some cases a series of treatments may be required to achieve desired results.

How long do the results last?

This varies from person to person. However, if you take steps to protect your freshly laser rejuvenated skin, including the use of sunscreen, facial cleansers and prescription skin care, your results may last several years. The precise depth control and ability to treat large areas in a relatively short amount of time makes these lasers valuable tools.
